A challenge in Sacramento is everything is flat. What could we design to alter that one-point perspective?
Structure was built out of shipping containers. To clad those – and to create something intriguing – we took an interpretation of a waveform and applied it to a rustic wood, borrowed from Stikwood, a company based in Sacramento. The materials were returned to Stikwood after the festival.
As the materials were on loan, we couldn’t cut them. Using algorithms in Grasshopper, we programmed a maximum use of the standard 3, 6, and 8-foot Stikwood lengths to create a certain amount of randomness.
The forms rise up and down along the flanks of the shipping containers, much like a music wave. The top of the containers was used as a runway, a bridge, and viewing platform. Jaguar Cars liked the setting so much it was employed in some of their advertising.
