The design inspiration was “structures and forms you can hide behind.” We wanted to do something intriguing and playful, and bigger than people. Something you could get lost in.
+ Last year’s idea was pitched just two weeks before the event; the entire installation was constructed in a few days.
+ We created 30 illuminated towers ranging in height from five to ten feet tall. A wood base anchored them to the ground with rebar.
+ Using Celtic Cloth, a heavyweight polyester fabric that has some stretch to it, we made the surface of the luminarias taught. That quality made for a more uniform surface at night when programmed lights within changed according to the music.
+ The structures were centrally located between the two main festival stages. As an ensemble, they defined a pixelated canyon space. (We feel it was our most successful event design yet.)
+ The lights reacted to sounds of the music as well as localized people’s speech and laughter. We could also control it remotely.
